Pradaxa is a blood thinning (anticoagulant) medication used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a very common type of arrhythmia - a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. Pradaxa was approved by the FDA in October, 2010. Since its approval, Pradaxa has been marketed as an alternative to Warfarin (Coumadin), a relatively safe drug that has been on the market since 1954. In April, 2012, the FDA put Pradaxa on its “Watch List” due to reports of death to patients on Pradaxa caused by hemorrhage / bleeding.
In November, 2011, several emergency medicine physicians submitted letters to the editor in the New England Journal of Medicine warning of the complications they see with severe bleeding in patients taking Pradaxa. Dr. Bryan Cotton, a trauma surgeon with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Memorial Hermann Hospital, wrote: "We have noted on multiple occasions patients who have 'bleeding out' from Pradaxa and our hands are tied . . . They're bleeding out all over and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it . . . I'm helpless and hopeless when it comes into my emergency room."
Do I have a Pradaxa case?
Serious bleeding events have been reported in patients taking Pradaxa, including:
- Hemorrhagic stroke
- Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleeding
- Irregular or excessive bleeding from minor injury or trauma
There are also concerns that the risks of taking Pradaxa outweigh the benefit that the drug provides to certain patients. If you or someone you know took Pradaxa and suffered these or any other complications, you may have grounds for a claim against the manufacturer of the drug. WARNING: Patients with AF should not stop taking Pradaxa without talking to their healthcare professional. Stopping use of blood thinning medications can increase your risk of stroke. Strokes can lead to permanent disability and death.
What to expect from a Pradaxa lawsuit
Though personal matters become public in any personal injury lawsuit, it is particularly true for defective drug victims – you will be forced to share the most intimate details of your daily life with strangers, many of whom are openly hostile. Choose a lawyer with whom you are comfortable and who is experienced in protecting Pradaxa victims from further harassment. As with any defective drug case, you should seek compensation for economic losses such as medical expenses (including those paid by your medical insurance provider) and loss wages for both the past and future.
These are typically expenses easily supported by documents, such as payroll stubs and medical bills. More challenging are the losses for which there are no hard measure – a permanently impaired body or the diminished ability to enjoy life are losses that also deserve valuation. Both the economic losses and the non-economic injuries are legitimate elements of the damages for which you look to the negligent manufacturer for compensation. Read more about damages.
