It is a bad year for riding a ski lift. Already two reported fatalities have occurred when guests fell off their ski lift chair. And two more disconcerting lift accidents occurred over the weekend.
Three men were injured on Saturday after their chair fell off lift cable, sending them to the ground. According to authorities, a chair carrying men in their 20s came loose and fell 30 feet at the Coffee Mill Ski Resort in Wabasha, Minnesota. After the fall, all the men were conscious but one has a back injury. A medical helicopter landed on a hill to rush the injured to a hospital.
Coffee Mill Ski Area was scheduled to host a racing event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, according to its website. The event was expected to bring racers from across the region. Inspectors were examining the chairlift Saturday afternoon, however the ski area remained open.
On the same day, three children and a ski instructor fell from a lift chair they were riding at Big Sky Resort in Montana. A resort official says it’s unclear what caused the four to fall off the Ramcharger Lift. First reports are that there didn’t appear to be a mechanical problem with the chair lift.
All four were taken to a local hospital and have since been discharged.
