Sadly, the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has brought the first ski death of the season. A skier was fatally injured Sunday after colliding with a metal stairway at Bear Mountain Ski Resort in southern California. Natalie Altieri, 21, was skiing at the resort at about 10:30 a.m. when she crashed into the stairway, according to the San Bernardino County coroner’s office.

The Ohio college student was taken to the hospital, where she died about an hour later.  Altieri was a student at the University of Cincinnati and was interning as an accessories design intern at BCBG Max Azria in Los Angeles. At UC, she was a member of the Cincy Snowcats skiing and snowboarding club.

Bear Mountain reports a base of 24″ of groomed, packed powder.
